W9WI.com/"Superpower FMs"

Here is the old article on this topic.

"Superpower FMs" fall into two categories:

  • 1. Stations authorized for higher power than the class maximum -- 50,000 watts for Class B, 100,000 watts for Class C.
  • 2. Stations authorized for higher power than should be allowed for their antenna height, even though it may be less than the class maximum.
  • The framework of the current FM regulations were established in the early 1960s. Stations authorized before the current regulations were allowed to continue to operate with their authorized facilities, even if those facilities were too powerful to be authorized for new stations under the new rules.

It should be noted that these "superpower" stations are only protected from interference in the area they would reach if they were using powers compliant with the modern limits. The extra coverage they get from their higher power is not protected from interference. On the other hand, any potential interfering station is going to *receive* more interference from the superpowered station. It might not be a good idea to build a Class A station at the shortest possible spacing to 290,000-watt WMC-FM!

These are sorted in order of how far their 60dBu signal exceeds what would ordinarily be permitted. Note that, because of unusually low antennas, five of these "superpowered" stations actually have less coverage than a station with class maximum power.

Now, those stations operating within class maximum power, but with an antenna too high for that power level:
